Alex Ruoff, WVU’s all-time 3-point field goal leader during his career from 2006-09, was named assistant men's basketball coach at WVU on July 1, 2023.
In 2022-23, Ruoff was a graduate assistant on the WVU men's basketball staff after retiring from playing professional basketball.
Ruoff recorded 261 3-point field goals during his career on his way to scoring 1,420 career points, leaving WVU as the 18th all-time leading scorer. He posted 73 games in double figures, including 16 games of 20 points or more. Ruoff finished with 410 assists, ranking seventh all-time, and 189 steals, ranking sixth in school history.
The native of Spring Hill, Florida, was a part of the 2006 NCAA Sweet 16 team, 2007 NIT Championship team, 2008 NCAA Sweet 16 team and the 2009 NCAA First Round team. As a senior, Ruoff averaged 15.7 points per game and played in 127 career games, starting every game he played in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Ruoff graduated from WVU in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He was named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American, one of five student-athletes chosen for men’s basketball that year. He was the Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the Big East Sportsmanship Award winner.
Following graduation, Ruoff played professionally for 12 seasons, including the Washington Wizards in the 2009 NBA Summer League and New Jersey Nets in the 2010 NBA Summer League. He played the 2012-13 season in the NBDL and played on professional teams in Belgium, Finland, Germany, Spain and Japan. Seven of his 12 years playing professionally were on teams in the ACB in Spain and in the BBL in Germany.
Ruoff received a master’s degree in sport management at WVU in 2023.
