MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 9 West Virginia University baseball team opened its final series of the season with a 2-0 victory over TCU, Thursday night at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 36-12 and 20-8 in the Big 12, setting a program record for most conference wins. The Horned Frogs fall to 32-19 and 16-12 in conference play.
Graduate student Ian Korn and senior Carson Estridge combined for the shutout, WVU's sixth of the season, the most since throwing six shutouts in 2019. Korn struck out six in 6.0 innings to improve to 5-0 while Estridge closed the game with 3.0 scoreless innings to collect his second save. Neither pitcher walked nor hit a batter on the night.
The only runs of the game came in the second inning as graduate student Sean Smith and senior Matthew Graveline hit back-to-back doubles. After a sacrifice bunt from junior Armani Guzman, graduate student Brodie Kresser hit a sacrifice fly to score Graveline.
TCU threatened with two runners on in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Korn escaped each time, including getting back-to-back strikeouts to end his outing.
Estridge allowed a single to his first batter in the seventh before retiring nine straight to close out the game.
The Mountaineers and Horned Frogs will meet again on Friday with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
