Mountaineers Rally to Defeat BYU

Senior Paul Schoenfeld had a big day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs, and has now reached base in 10 straight plate appearances. Sophomore Gavin Kelly had three hits and three RBI while graduate student Brodie Kresser had two hits and three RBI. Overall, WVU collected 18 hits in the game.
Graduate student Ian Korn earned his first win as a Mountaineer with 4.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs and striking out a season-high seven batters. Freshman David Perez earned his second save of the series and fourth of the season.
The two teams traded runs in the second before BYU put up a three-spot in the third after a brief rain delay. In the home half of the third, West Virginia got back within one as Kelly had an RBI double and Schoenfeld an RBI single.
The Cougars took their biggest lead of the game with four runs in the fourth. Once again, the Mountaineers got back within one with four runs of their own in the fifth inning. A two-run single from Kresser opened the scoring before an error opened the door for two more runs. Kresser then tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh, WVU tallied its second four-run inning of the game, this time beginning with two outs and nobody on. Junior Tyrus Hall started with a single before sophomore Matt Ineich worked a walk. Kelly followed with a two-run triple to put the Mountaineers in front. Schoenfeld then drove in Kelly with his fifth hit of the game before coming around to score on a wild pitch.
BYU hit a two-run home run in the ninth before Perez came in and shut the door.
West Virginia will look for its second sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m.
