
Mountaineers Complete Sweep of BYU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20 West Virginia University baseball team defeated BYU, 11-1, in eight innings, Saturday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark to complete the three-game sweep. The Mountaineers improve to 16-4 and 5-1 in the Big 12 while the Cougars fall to 10-12 and 2-4 in league play.
Graduate student Sean Smith had two hits, a home run and a triple, and reached base four times, scoring three runs. Sophomore Gavin Kelly had two hits and two RBI while Tyrus Hall reached base four times, drove in two runs and scored two runs.
Redshirt junior Maxx Yehl was dominant on the mound once again, allowing just one run in 7.0 innings while striking out 11. Graduate student Reese Bassinger tossed a scoreless inning in relief with a strikeout as the two pitchers combined for zero walks.
Hall opened the scoring in the second with an RBI single. Hall then combined with junior Armani Guzman for a first-and-third double steal before Hall had a straight steal of home. Senior Brock Wills capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.
In the fifth, Guzman hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0 before the Cougars hit a solo home run in the sixth to get on the board, Yehl's first run allowed in 16 innings.
Smith hit his third home run of the year in the seventh. Kelly tacked on two more runs in the inning with a single.
In the eighth, the Mountaineers put up three runs with Hall hitting a sacrifice fly to end the game via run-rule.
West Virginia will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 24, to take on Marshall. First pitch from Jack Cook Field in Huntington is set for 6 p.m.
