
Mountaineers Bounce Back to Even Series Against Baylor

WACO, Texas – The West Virginia University baseball team evened up the series with Baylor, Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bears, 13-2, in seven innings. The Mountaineers improve to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Baylor falls to 11-7 and 1-1 in the Big 12.
Six different Mountaineers had multiple hits on the afternoon as WVU tallied 17 for the game. Senior Paul Schoenfeld led the way with three hits, four RBI, and two runs scored. Senior Brock Wills also had three hits and two RBI while sophomores Matt Ineich and Gavin Kelly each scored three runs at the top of the lineup.
Sophomore Chansen Cole earned the win with 6.0 innings on the mound, striking out five while allowing just two runs on three hits. Sophomore Bryant Yoak closed out the game with two strikeouts in a scoreless frame.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead in the first as the first three batters reached base, culminating in a two-run double by Schoenfeld who then came around to score on a double by Wills.
In the second, WVU added three more runs, getting RBI singles from Schoenfeld, Wills and graduate student Brodie Kresser. In the fourth, Wills dove home for the seventh run of the game on a bunt by junior Armani Guzman, just beating the tag.
A two-run home run by Baylor in the fourth got them on the board, but graduate student Sean Smith got those runs back with a two-run single in the fifth.
In the sixth, the Mountaineers tacked on three more runs to go up double-digits on a single by junior Tyrus Hall, double by Ineich, and triple by Schoenfeld. Guzman added a 13th run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.
The two teams will meet for the rubber game on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
