Mountaineers Fall Short of No. 17 Texas Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women's basketball fell just short, 71-66, of an upset bid against No. 17 Texas Tech on Wednesday night inside Hope Coliseum.
Senior guard Jordan Harrison finished with a season-high 22 points and added a game high five assists. Junior forward Carter McCray tallied 15 points and six rebounds while Graduate forward Kierra Wheeler narrowly missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Senior guard Sydney Shaw was the final mountaineer in double figures with 10.
West Virginia (13-3, 3-1 Big 12) and Texas Tech (17-0, 4-0 Big 12) played in a tight contest all night as both teams never built a lead of more than six points in the contest. WVU used a 25-point third quarter to erase a three-point halftime deficit and carried a 53–50 advantage into the final period. The Mountaineers would take its largest lead of the game with eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but a 3 of 19 mark from the floor plagued the winning effort.
The Mountaineers led as many as four points with four minutes to play and led as late as the 1:52 mark of the final frame, but Texas Tech scored the final 14 of the final 19 points in the contest to seal the win.
Despite the Mountaineers' 18 offensive rebounds in the game, the Mountaineers only converted eight second chance points as TTU scored 20 off their 16 boards. WVU also struggled from the line, converting just 12 of 20 attempts while the Lady Raiders converted 83.3% of their attempts.
Next up, West Virginia is back on the road for its second of three straight ranked matchups. The Mountaineers are heading to Ames, Iowa to take on No. 11 Iowa State inside Hilton Coliseum at 3 p.m. ET.
