
Harrison, Wheeler Lead WVU to Win Over No. 11 Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (Jan. 11, 2026) – The West Virginia women's basketball team collected its highest-ranked win since 2019 with an 83-70 road win over No. 11 Iowa State inside Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate forward Kierra Wheeler took control of the paint, scoring a season-high 25 points and adding seven rebounds. Senior guard Jordan Harrison filled the stat sheet with 19 points, eight assists, seven steals and five rebounds. She is just the fourth player in program history to reach the marks in a single contest.
West Virginia finished the game shooting 50.8% from the floor and knocked down seven of 13 attempts from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers controlled the game from inside the paint, outscoring the Cyclones 44-20 from the high percentage area. The Cyclones coughed up 25 turnovers in the game, resulting in 30 points for WVU. West Virginia finished the game with 65 field goal attempts compared to the Cyclones' 46.
The Cyclones managed to build a seven-point lead to the 2:30 mark of the opening quarter at 21-14. The Mountaineers rallied, scoring the game's next seven points to level the score at 21 with 35 seconds to play. Iowa State would score on its next possession before a buzzer-beater three from Harrison gave the Mountaineers a one-point advantage after the opening 10.
Harrison's last-second three gave her 10 points in the opening frame and marked the 1,500th of her career.
Iowa State regained the lead on the opening possession of the second and maintained its advantage over the next seven minutes. The Mountaineers went to work in the paint to close out the half, with McCray giving WVU a one-point lead before a Harrison steal and dish to Wheeler gave WVU its largest lead of the half at 40-37. Wheeler finished the half with a game-high 16 points as the Mountaineers took a 40-39 lead into the locker room.
West Virginia controlled the opening two minutes of the second half, scoring nine opening points to extend their lead out to double-digits for the only time in the contest. Leading 49-39, Iowa State scored four points at the line and made its first field goal at the five-minute mark to pull within four points of WVU. West Virginia outscored Iowa State 11-4 over the final five, forcing multiple turnovers, and closed the quarter on a small run. The Mountaineers entered the fourth quarter with a 59-50 lead.

Harrison opened the period with a jumper to push the lead to double digits. Shaw knocked down a key second-chance three at the 7:56 mark, stretching the lead back to 11 after Iowa State briefly cut it to eight. The Mountaineers' advantage ballooned to its largest of the game, 17 points with 5:16 remaining, after Wheeler hit back-to-back free throws.
Iowa State tried to respond with inside baskets from Audi Crooks and a pair of late three-pointers from Sydney Harris, but WVU answered each push. West Virginia shot 60% from the field in the fourth and controlled the game down the stretch to finish off the upset.
