
Woodley, Cooke Lead WVU Past BYU in Big 12 Road Win

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull away from BYU, 91-77, on Saturday night at the Marriott Center.
The Mountaineers erased a 13-point first-quarter deficit to move to 5-0 on the road in Big 12 Conference games. WVU is 6-0 on the season in road games. The Mountaineers forced 25 turnovers and converted them into 29 points, fueling a transition-heavy attack that produced 19 fast-break points.
Sydney Woodley came off the bench to score 23 points on 11-of-12 free throws, adding 4 steals, while Gia Cooke poured in 21 points with four three-pointers and four assists without a turnover. Carter McCray posted a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double to hit the stat line for the first time in her WVU career. Jordan Harrison filled the stat sheet with 11 points, six assists and four steals. Kierra Wheeler added 11 points and a block.
BYU led 20–7 early behind a run of 3-pointers, but West Virginia closed the first half on a 29–18 surge to take a 41–38 lead at the break.
WVU delivered the game's decisive burst early in the third quarter. In a span of 19 seconds, Sydney Shaw drilled a three, Harrison converted a runout layup, and Cooke splashed another triple to flip a 41–41 tie into a 49–41 lead at 8:41 of the period. The Mountaineers never trailed again.
West Virginia outscored BYU 21–17 in the third quarter and 29–22 in the fourth, controlling the paint throughout. WVU extended its lead out to 15 points midway through the fourth quarter before BYU cut the lead to single digits twice. WVU responded each time, ultimately pulling out the 14-point road win.
The Mountaineers finished with a 50–20 edge in paint points and held a 32–29 rebounding advantage. West Virginia shot 51 percent from the field and went 22 of 29 at the line. BYU shot 49 percent overall but managed only 11 assists to its 25 turnovers thanks to a strong WVU defensive effort.
Delaney Gibb led BYU with 28 points, including three 3-pointers and a 7-for-8 effort at the line. Olivia Hamlin scored 13 points with three 3s, and Marya Hudgins added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Cougars shot 11 of 24 from behind the arc, but were undone by turnovers.
West Virginia is now 3-1 all-time against the Cougars, and 3-0 in conference games. The Mountaineers have won two straight when playing inside the Marriott Center.
The Mountaineers now travel to Salt Lake City to close out their road swing against Utah. Tipoff on Tuesday, Feb. 27, is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
