
Mountaineers to Compete in Big 12 East Showdown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving team compete in the Big 12 East Showdown at CRWC Natatorium in Houston on Jan. 16-17.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday. The meet will be streamed live on YouTube.
West Virginia will compete against Cincinnati, Houston (women's only), Iowa State (women's only) and TCU.
Last time out, West Virginia lost to Pitt in the Backyard Brawl. Four Mountaineers won individual events, and two swimmers on the women's team posted top-10 times in events.
Freshman Madalyn Witt recorded the ninth-fastest time in program history in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.35) while placing second, and redshirt junior Sofia Deste posted the eighth-fastest time in program history in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.34) while placing third.
Freshman Jake Salcedo added another win to his season, placing first in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:18.73).
West Virginia has not faced any of these teams in a dual meet since the women's team hosted Iowa State during the 2023-24 season.
At the 2025 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, the women's team finished just ahead of Iowa State in the final standings. Houston placed third, TCU finished fourth and Cincinnati placed sixth.
On the men's side, WVU finished behind Cincinnati at seventh place in the final standings, and TCU placed fourth.
