MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Sept. 19, 2025) – The No. 13 West Virginia University men's soccer team opened Sun Belt play with a 2-1 win over James Madison, Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 5-1-1 while the Dukes fall to 0-5-1.
 
Junior Pablo Pozos tallied his Sun Belt-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior Marcus Caldeira continued his prolific scoring as he picked up three points on his fifth goal and sixth assist of the year.
 
Overall, the Mountaineers outshout James Madison, 17-10, including a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. WVU also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
 
West Virginia had a trio of shots on goal early in the contest before Pozos took a pass from Caldeira in the box and curled a shot past the keeper to put the Mountaineers on top in the 13^th minute.
 
The score remained the same until the break, but soon after returning to the field for the second half, the Mountaineers earned a free kick just outside the box in the 48^th minute. Caldeira stepped up and got his shot around the wall and into the back of the net.
 
James Madison got one goal back in the 67^th minute on a penalty kick, but the Mountaineers defense buckled down and allowed just two shots the rest of the way, neither of which was on target.
 
West Virginia will be back home on Tuesday for a top-15 matchup against No. 11 High Point. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
