
Mountaineers Shut Out La Salle

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 16 West Virginia University men's soccer team shut out La Salle, 4-0, Monday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 2-0-0 on the season while the Explorers fall to 0-1-1.
Senior Marcus Caldeira scored two goals in the game, the 30th and 31st of his career, bringing him into a tie for 7th in WVU history with Andy Bevin. Junior Thijs Veldhorst and graduate student Bryce Swinehart added their first goals as Mountaineers.
Senior Ethan Dekel Daks had two assists while sophomore Braedon Smith and senior Antonio Lima each had one. Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves in net to secure his first shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the 9th minute as Caldeira slotted a free kick between two players on the Explorer wall.
After La Salle went down a man in the 37th minute due to a straight red card, West Virginia doubled its lead in the 41st minute as Dekel Daks served a corner kick into the box for Veldhorst to head into the back of the net.
In the 63rd minute, Swinehart scored into an open net as Lima sent the ball across the box perfectly to him that brought the keeper out of position.
Caldeira added his second goal of the night in the 86th minute as he took a pass from Smith, flicked it over the keeper and then knocked it into the open net.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Friday, Aug. 29, at No. 21 Akron. Kickoff from FirstEnergy Field is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPN+.
