MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's basketball head coach Mark Kellogg has announced the addition of Gia Cooke (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Houston / Maryland) to a grant-in-aid for the 2025-26 academic year.
"Gia is a great addition and a versatile player that will excel in our program," Kellogg said. "She is a guard who plays with a tough and aggressive mindset."
"Gia can handle the ball to the rim, score at mid-range and shoot the three. Her competitive spirit will allow her to thrive in our defensive system. We are excited to add another important piece to our Mountaineer family."
The 5-foot-8 guard from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, has played two seasons of collegiate basketball with two remaining seasons after beginning her career at Maryland and playing last season at Houston.
Cooke saw action in 27 games while making 22 starts during her sophomore season in 2024-25. She was the second-leading scorer with Houston after averaging 12.4 points per game. She led Houston in scoring during nine games including six Big 12 Conference games. She made her Houston debut and scored 18 points in the season opener vs. UTRGV and made her first career start and posted 21 points against Rice. She scored a career-high 25 points in conference play against TCU.
During her freshman season at Maryland, Cooke saw action in 25 games. She averaged 6.4 minutes per game and scored a season-high 10 points against DePaul.
Cooke came out of high school as a highly regarded four-star recruit. She earned First Team All-Met honors from The Washington Post as she helped lead McNamara High School to three straight WCAC title games. She averaged 15.0 points, four rebounds and three assists as team captain in her senior season. During the 2019-20 campaign, she led her team to a 27-5 record and a WCAC title. Additionally, she earned a spot on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League Third Team in 2021 and played AAU for Team Takeover.
She intends to pursue a degree in communications while at West Virginia University. Her mother is Dani Cooke and she has two siblings, Dallas and Montanna.
