MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Utah on Saturday at Kendrick Family Ballpark and as a result, swept the series. The Mountaineers took game one, 6-4, before winning 14-4 in eight innings in the second game.
West Virginia improves to 27-4 and 7-3 in the Big 12 while the Utes fall to 13-16 and 2-10 in conference play.
Senior
Brodie Kresser had six hits in the twin bill including a three-run home run in game one. Sophomore
Spencer Barnett went 4-for-4 in game two while tallying two RBI and four runs scored. Junior
Skylar King drove in four runs in game two while senior
Grant Hussey hit a home run and had two RBI.
In game one, senior
Reese Bassinger tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. In game two, graduate student
Jack Kartsonas struck out six in 3.2 innings to earn his second win. Mountaineer pitchers did not walk a batter in game two and walked only three in the 17 innings pitched.
After Utah took a first-inning lead in the first game, senior
Jace Rinehart tied up the game in the home half with an RBI single. Kresser put the Mountaineers on top in the second with a three-run home run, his third of the season.
The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning as Kresser came through with a two-out RBI double. Utah scored two runs in the fifth to get within one before freshman
Gavin Kelly pushed the lead back to two in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.
Bassinger had traffic on the bases in the final two innings but made the big pitches to get out of the jams and secure the victory.
In game two, Utah once again took an early lead with a run in the second inning, but like the first game, the Mountaineers responded, this time scoring four runs in the second. Hussey started the inning with his 42
nd career home run. An error gave WVU the lead before King had a two-run single.
Redshirt junior
Chase Swain hit an RBI single in the third before the Mountaineers scored five in the fourth inning to separate from the Utes as Barnett had an RBI single, King a two-run triple, Rinehart an RBI double, and Hussey an RBI single.
A sacrifice fly from Rinehart in the fifth and a single by Kresser extended the WVU lead to 12-4. The Mountaineers ended the game via run rule in the eighth, first getting a little league home run off the bat of Kelly, who doubled and came around to score on a throwing error. Redshirt freshman
Alex Marot then walked and eventually came around to score on an error to end the game.
The Mountaineers will be back at home on Tuesday to face Penn State. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
