March 10, 2025 03:04 PM | Men's Basketball
KANSAS CITY – West Virginia guard Javon Small was named to the 10-member All-Big 12 First Team announced by the conference this afternoon.
He finished the regular season tied with UCF's Keyshawn Hall for the league's individual scoring title, both players tallying 572 points for an 18.5-points-per-game average.
The South Bend, Indiana, resident is currently third in the conference in free throw percentage (.881), third in assists per game (5.6), fourth in 3-point field goal percentage (.353), fourth in 3-point field goals per game (2.5), ninth in assist-to-turnover ratio (+2.1) and 12th in steals per game (1.6).
West Virginia sophomore guard Sencire Harris was named to this year's All-Big 12 Defensive Squad.
Small becomes just the fourth Mountaineer player to receive All-Big 12 First Team recognition since West Virginia began playing in the conference in 2012-13.
Forward Derek Culver did it in 2021, guard Jevon Carter was a first-team choice in 2018, and guard Juwan Staten was a two-time honoree in 2014-15 back when the league was comprised of 10 teams and selected three separate five-player units.
Small's current scoring average is the highest by a Mountaineer player since forward Kevin Jones averaged 19.9 points per game in 2012.
"I just hope people really appreciate the season he had," West Virginia coach Darian DeVries said following the Mountaineers' 72-65 victory over UCF last Saturday at the WVU Coliseum. "I've been doing this a long time and there's only two or three guys that I can name that had a season like this."
West Virginia's victory over UCF locked up a seventh-place tie in the conference standings with Baylor.
The Mountaineers were predicted to finish 13th in the preseason media poll in coach Darian DeVries' first season in Morgantown.
The Bears earned the tiebreaker over West Virginia in this week's Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City by virtue of a 74-71 victory in Waco last month.
The Mountaineers (19-12 overall) will begin tournament play on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday afternoon's game between TCU and Colorado.
All tournament games are being played at T-Mobile Center in downtown Kansas City.
