MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Coppin State's Larry Stewart managed to do something tonight others coaching in the Coliseum have never done before – get thrown out of game while his team was winning!
Stewart received two technical fouls arguing a no-call when Harlan Obioha blocked Tyler Koenig's shot and was tossed from the game with 13:59 still showing on the clock and his team leading 11-9.
Stewart's outburst was easily the highlight in a game West Virginia won easily 91-49.
Temple's John Chaney once got rung up here with a minute left in the first half when he bumped official Phil Bova, triggering a police escort to the locker room with his Owls trailing 53-20 in a game they eventually lost 91-66.
A month prior to Chaney, St. Bonaventure's Tom Chapman was thrown out after receiving his second technical foul with 13 seconds left in the first half and his team trailing the Mountaineers 50-13.
West Virginia wound up scoring 125 to St. Bonaventure's 64.
Regarding other quick ejections, Texas Tech's Grant McCasland got thrown out of last year's Houston game four minutes into it after arguing J.T. Toppin's flagrant-2 foul.
After Stewart's removal tonight, West Virginia scored 15 of the game's next 17 points and never looked back. Coppin State (2-9) was limited to just 17 second-half points to become the fourth team this season failing to score at least 50 points in a game against the Mountaineers.
The country's No. 1-ranked scoring defense held the Eagles to just 31.5% shooting while limiting them to scores on just 35.4% of their possessions.
"Probably for the first time this season, we weren't quite ready to roll from the tip," West Virginia coach Ross Hodge said afterward. "We had gotten off to really good starts in every game that we played, so that was a little disappointing.
"You are dealing with human beings, and I have to remind people sometimes that this is not a video game where you plug it in, and if a guy is rated a 97 free throw shooter, he's 97 free throw shooter every time or whatever," Hodge added. "We weren't quite ready to go and that responsibility falls on my shoulders."
West Virginia (7-2) got 17 points each from Honor Huff and Chance Moore, while Brenen Lorient added 12 and Treysen Eaglestaff contributed 11.
Eaglestaff, shooting just 19.4% from 3-point range coming into today's game, managed to get three of his triples to go down. He also pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Seven different Mountaineer players scored at least 8 points tonight.
Overall, West Virginia made 30 of its 64 field goal attempts for 46.9%, including 11 of 34 from 3-point distance for 32.4%.
Hassan Perkins was the only Coppin State player to reach double figures with 11 points.
"I thought our guys had a mature response in the second half, starting on the defensive end of the floor, and I really thought it kind of started with Jasper (Floyd) going and getting some physical rebounds," Hodge said. "He goes 1-4 (shooting), 0-2 (from 3-point range) and he's plus-30 for the night. That's what we've got to continue to get everybody to buy into."
West Virginia travels to Charleston to face Wake Forest at the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday night. The game will tip off at 6 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
Tickets still remain for the game and can be purchased through TicketMaster.
