Second Half Surge Pushes Mountaineers Past Georgia Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women's basketball team won its third straight game, defeating Georgia Tech 82-50 on Thursday evening inside Hope Coliseum.
Both teams were sluggish offensively in the opening half as the Mountaineers took just a 27-19 lead into the break. It was all West Virginia over the final 10 minutes of action, pouring in 30 points in the third and 25 in the fourth on the way to a 32-point win. It marks the sixth time this season that West Virginia has won by 30 or more points.
The Mountaineers had four players finish in double-digits, led by Gia Cooke, who finished with 23 points. The effort was the fourth time this season she has hit 20 and the 10th straight contest in double-figures. Senior guard Sydney Shaw finished with 18 points as the pair finished with seven of the Mountaineers' nine three-pointers.
Senior guard Jordan Harrison filled the stat sheet with 16 points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals. She is the first player to hit the stat line since JJ Quinerly during the 2023 season. Graduate forward Kierra Wheeler finished with her third double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Defensively, West Virginia forced 28 turnovers, reaching 25-plus for the 6th time this season. West Virginia finished the game shooting 31 of 71 (43.7%) from the field despite connecting on just 27.5 percent of its attempts in the first half.
The Mountaineers opened the game on a 7-0 run before extending their lead out to as many as 10 points at 12-2 with under five to play. WVU forced the Yellow Jackets into 11 turnovers in the quarter as the Mountaineers took a 13-6 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The second half was a defensive battle with both sides making five attempts from the floor. WVU forced Georgia Tech into six more turnovers in the quarter before the Mountaineers took a 27-19 lead into halftime. Harrison led all scorers to the break with nine points.
After giving up an opening possession basket, the Mountaineers strung together nine straight points over three minutes and a 36-21 lead. West Virginia outscored the Yellow Jackets 18-5 to the five-minute mark. The offensive surge gave the Mountaineers their largest lead of the quarter at 21 points.
West Virginia finished the frame shooting 60% from the floor and knocked down five attempts from beyond the arc. Shaw scored 11 of her points in the quarter to help the Mountaineers on their way to a 57-41 lead.
The Mountaineers limited Georgia Tech to single-digit points for the second quarter in the game during the final 10 minutes. The Yellow Jackets managed just nine points to the Mountaineers' 25.
During the last three seasons, the Mountaineers are 30-3 in nonconference action and 37-3 when playing any game inside the confines of Hope Coliseum.
Next up, West Virginia closes out nonconference play on the road against Texas A&M on Sunday. Tipoff for the contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
