
West Virginia Closes Out Nonconference with Win Over Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The West Virginia women's basketball team won its fourth straight contest, defeating Texas A&M on the road, 63-45, to close out nonconference action inside Reed Arena.
Graduate guard Kierra Wheeler finished with her second straight and fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. She added five steals.
In total, four Mountaineers finished in double figures. Senior guard Jordan Harrison and junior guard Gia Cooke each tallied 13 points. Senior guard Sydney Shaw narrowly miss out on her second career double-double, finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Defensively, West Virginia forced 24 turnovers, reaching 24-plus for the 7th time this season. West Virginia finished the game shooting 24 of 58 (41.4%) from the field. The Aggies made just 15 of 44 attempts in the game, including just three made three-pointers.
WVU dominated the glass in the contest, out rebounding Texas A&M 39-29, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive end. West Virginia scored 30 points from inside the paint and made use of 16 second-chance points.
The Mountaineers and the Aggies played to an even 14 points during the opening quarter. Out of the break, Texas A&M scored the opening three points before a 10-0 run pushed WVU to a 24-17 lead. West Virginia pushed its lead out to as many as 12 points twice before taking a 33-23 lead into the break. The Aggies struggled from the floor in the quarter, connecting on just 2 of 11 attempts from the floor.
West Virginia and the Aggies traded baskets in the third quarter, but a 9-4 Mountaineer run to close out the final three minutes pushed the lead to 13 points. WVU pushed its lead to as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Aggies 14-9 in the frame.
During the last three seasons, the Mountaineers are 31-3 in nonconference action. The win marks the third straight season the Mountaineers have reached double-digit wins before opening league play.
Next up, West Virginia opens Big 12 Conference play against Houston on Sunday, Dec. 21. Tipoff for the contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
