MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 18 West Virginia University wrestling team defeated Rider, 25-10, to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1992 on Sunday at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown.
Redshirt junior No. 20 Brody Conley had one of the best performances so far this year for West Virginia (5-0) in the 174-pound match.
After an early takedown against Rider's Enrique Munguia, Conley quickly found himself down 6-3 after the first period. Munguia nearly pinned Conley for the fall, but Conley continuously fought back and survived the period to only trail after a four-point near fall.
The second period proved uneventful as Conley still trailed. An early reversal in the final period cut the deficit to one for Conley, and a stall warning tied the match at six with a little over one minute remaining.
Late in the period, Conley went on the offensive and turned the tide of the match to win by fall.
The Mountaineers earned wins in all but three weight classes on the day. Redshirt sophomore No. 1 Ty Watters (157) dominated to remain undefeated as he won by technical fall over Liam Scrivanich, 18-2.
Redshirt senior Jordan Titus earned his first ranked win of the season in the 141-pound match, as he defeated No. 19 Elijah Griffin by decision, 5-2. Redshirt freshman No. 27 Rune Lawrence (197) also earned a ranked victory for WVU, defeating No. 21 Brock Zurawski, 11-8, in sudden victory.
The two true freshmen in the starting lineup for WVU also earned victories. Freshman Gunner Andrick beat Will Betancourt in the 133-pound match by decision, 6-3, and freshman Brock Kehler defeated Steyn De Lange by decision, 4-2, in the heavyweight match.
Redshirt junior No. 17 Ian Bush (184) remained undefeated in dual competition as he rolled past JP Hangey. He won by technical fall, 16-0.
The last time West Virginia began a season 5-0, the Mountaineers finished 7-6 overall. WVU improved to 4-1 all-time against Rider.
West Virginia returns to action at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 5-6, at the Westgate Hotel Paradise Event Center in Las Vegas.
