MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After helping the Mountaineers earn a pair of shutouts last week, junior defender Jacey Rase has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
The accolade marks the first Big 12 weekly honor of Rase's career, while she earned WVU's third defensive player of the week nod this season. The award also marks the sixth weekly honor for WVU this season.
A native of Troutman, North Carolina, Rase played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over Iowa State on Oct. 23, before playing the full 90 in a 2-0 win over Oklahoma State on Oct. 26. The shutouts pushed the defense's season total to 10 clean sheets on the year, its most in a season since 2022.
Rase and the WVU defense did not allow Oklahoma State to tally a shot on goal, while it held Iowa State to just three shots on frame. Additionally, the back line allowed just six total shots across the two matches.
West Virginia leads the Big 12 and ranks No. 16 nationally in shutout percentage (0.588). Rase also ranks third on the team with 1,412 minutes played this season.
Up next, WVU officially concludes the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 30, welcoming Big 12 foe Cincinnati to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers will celebrate Halloween at the match as part of its Tricks and Kicks Night, and kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
