
Mountaineers Draw With UNC Greensboro

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 5 West Virginia University men's soccer team recorded its second straight draw on Tuesday evening, drawing with UNC Greensboro, 2-2, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers go to 4-0-2 while the Spartans are now 3-1-3.
Junior Marcus Caldeira and graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro each found the back of the net for WVU while freshman Isaac Scheer collected his second assist of the season. Overall, the Mountaineers outshot UNCG, 16-7, with shots on goal even at four. West Virginia also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The scoring started in the fifth minute as Caldeira left the ball off for Scheer, who slotted it back to Caldeira in the box where got his shot past the keeper and into the back of the net. It was the 20th goal of his career.
UNCG responded just over a minute later on a goal by Arnaud Tattevin to even up the contest.
In the 23rd minute, the Mountaineers earned a penalty kick as UNCG committed a handball in the box. Ors Navarro stepped up the spot and buried it for his 20th career goal as well.
West Virginia held the lead into the second half, but the Spartans equalized once again in the 59th minute. UNCG nearly took the lead in the 81st minute but Keanan Bader's shot hit the post.
The Mountaineers managed four shots in the final 25 minutes, none better than senior Carlos Hernando's opportunity in the closing seconds the game, but his shot went just over the bar.
West Virginia will be back on the pitch on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Old Dominion to open Sun Belt play. Kickoff from Norfolk, Va. is set for 7 p.m.
