Mountaineers Finish First Day at Bedford Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team finished the first day of the Bedford Cup at the JTCC Tennis Facility in College Park, Maryland, on Friday.
Four Mountaineers are competing in the tournament, including seniors Michaela Kucharova and Mille Haagensen, redshirt junior Maja Dodik and freshman Laura Villanueva Morillo. These are the first appearances for Haagensen and Villanueva Morillo at WVU.
Despite falling in the first set, 6-3, Kucharova stormed back and defeated Delaware State's Kit Yi Kaye Au-Yeung in the second set, 6-1. Kucharova took the win in the tiebreaker, 10-7.
Dodik earned her first win of the fall campaign as she dominated Morgan State's Hannah Smith, 6-1, 6-2. In her first appearance as Mountaineer, Haagensen was unstoppable, winning 6-4, 6-2.
Villanueva Morillo battled against Delaware State's Lucia Casas Blas, taking the first set, 7-5. However, she was unable to take the win, falling 7-6 (6), 11-9 in the second and third sets.
In doubles play, the Mountaineers were commanding as the pairing of Kucharova and Dodik won, 6-1. The doubles team of Haagensen and Villanueva Morillo earned the win, 6-2.
