
Three Mountaineers Advance to Semifinals at Thunder in the Mountains

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four student-athletes from the West Virginia University tennis team are competing in the Thunder in the Mountains tournament at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts in Charleston, West Virginia, from Sept. 27-29.
Freshman Laura Villanueva Morillo earned a dominant victory in the first round on Friday, defeating Marshall's Kylie Fisher, 6-0, 6-0. Villanueva Morillo followed up that victory with a strong performance against Marshall's Katy Limanen, winning, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals of the main draw.
Redshirt sophomore Maja Dodik earned her first win of the day, defeating Nadia Orcutt, 6-0, 6-1. Dodik advanced to the quarterfinals to face Marshall's Emma Vanderheyden. Dodik lost to Vanderheyden, 6-4, 6-3.
Seniors Michaela Kucharova and Mille Haagensen also advanced to the semifinals. Kucharova defeated Lyla Byers, 6-4, (4) 6-7 (7), 11-9, and Haagensen beat Ruhika Bhat, 6-2, 7 (7)-6.
Kucharova will face Villanueva Morillo in the semifinals on Saturday and Haagensen will face Vanderheyden.
