MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team wrapped up its second tournament of the fall season at the Penn Invitational on Saturday.

The Mountaineers collected several strong individual performances throughout the weekend, led by Rio Maeda and Laura Villanueva Morillo, who each went undefeated in singles play against Penn. Maeda earned three victories, while Villanueva Morillo picked up three wins of her own.

Maeda opened the tournament with a three-set victory over Joleen Saw, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (4), before defeating Penn's Athina Schlepphorst, 7-5, 6-2, and Peien Deng, 6-0, 6-3.

Villanueva Morillo also opened with a straight-set victory, defeating Lara Stojanovski, 6-0, 6-3. She followed with a 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over Deng before closing the weekend with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Emma Tomova.

West Virginia also earned singles victories against Drexel, with Lucia Tognoni, Lyla Byers, Sosanna Malaak and Daniela Gonzalez each picking up wins.

Malaak defeated Drexel's Olivia Chowgule, 6-0, 6-0, while Gonzalez earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lidia Ratobylskaya. Byers also defeated Ratobylskaya, 6-0, 6-1, later in the weekend, while Tognoni earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Alyna Sogomonyan.

The Mountaineers also opened doubles play with three victories against Penn. Villanueva Morillo and Tognoni defeated Peien Deng and Emma Tomova, 7-5, while Byers and Maeda earned a 7-5 victory over Schlepphorst and Sasha Motlagh. Gonzalez and Malaak added a 6-2 win over Penn's Jarvis-Tredgett and Vedula.

West Virginia returns to Morgantown next weekend for the Martha Thorn Invitational, Oct. 2-4.
