Mountaineers Set for Fall Opener at UTR Charleston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opens its 2026 fall season this weekend at the UTR Charleston in Charleston, W.Va.

The three-day tournament is scheduled for Sept. 18-20, with play beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day.

The Mountaineers enter the fall looking to build on last season with a mix of returning players and newcomers. West Virginia returns juniors Lyla Byers and Laura Villanueva Morillo, along with sophomores Lucia Tognoni and Sosanna Malaak.

WVU also welcomes five newcomers to the roster. Freshman Sela Byers, Daniela Gonzales and Sorana Matis join the team, while sophomore transfer Ela Plosnik arrives from Miami and junior transfer Rio Maeda joins the squad from South Alabama.

UTR Charleston marks the first of six tournaments on West Virginia's fall schedule. Following this weekend's tournament, the Mountaineers will compete at the Penn Invitational on Sept. 25-27 in Philadelphia, Pa.
