Mountaineers Head to Penn Invitational

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team continues its 2026 fall season this weekend at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., on Sept. 25-27.

The Mountaineers enter the weekend following a strong opening tournament at UTR Charleston, where two West Virginia players reached the semifinals of the main draw and Lyla Byers claimed the back-draw championship.

Rio Maeda and Sorana Matis both reached the main-draw semifinals in Charleston. Maeda advanced with three wins, including a three-set victory in the quarterfinals, while Matis earned two straight-set wins before falling in three sets in the semifinals.

Byers moved to the back draw after falling in the round of 16 in the main draw. She won three consecutive matches, including a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the back-draw final.

Following the Penn Invitational, West Virginia returns to Morgantown for the Martha Thorn Invitational, on Oct. 2-4. The home tournament will mark the Mountaineers' first and only opportunity to compete in front of the home crowd this fall.
