MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3 West Virginia University men's soccer team handed Saint Francis its first loss in two years on Monday, defeating the Red Flash, 4-0, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 2-0 while the SFU falls to 1-1.
After netting a hat trick in the season opener, graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro settled for a brace on Monday. Graduate student Simon Carlson also found the back of the net twice in the victory while adding an assist. Seniors Frederik Jorgensen and Dante Huckaby collected assists for the Mountaineers as well.
Saint Francis, who came into the match unbeaten in its last 16 contests dating back to 2022, managed just one shot on the night as redshirt-senior Marc Bonnaire registered his first shutout of the season for WVU.
The Mountaineers were relentless on the attack, taking 17 shots with 10 of them on frame, while also holding a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Carlson opened the scoring in the 8th minute, corralling in a cross from Huckaby before firing a shot past the Red Flash keeper.
Ors Navarro doubled the Mountaineer lead in the 15th minute as he beat the goalkeeper to a bouncing ball before burying a shot into a wide-open net.
The score remained the same until the 75th minute when Carlson took charge of a free kick, firing a shot through the wall and past a diving keeper. In the 81st minute, Carlson was part of the fourth goal of the night as he laid a ball to Jorgensen who crossed it into the box for Ors Navarro to put away.
West Virginia will be back at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday, Aug. 30, to take on George Washington. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
