
Mountaineers Set to Open Tucson Regional Against DBU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team begins NCAA Regional play on Friday, May 31, as it takes on No. 25 Dallas Baptist from Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET/12 p.m. MST.
The Mountaineers earned the No. 3 seed in the region while the Patriots are the No. 2 seed. Host and No. 13 national seed Arizona will take on No. 4 seed Grand Canyon on Friday at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. MST.
The game between West Virginia and DBU will air on ESPN2 with Mike Ferrin and Jensen Lewis on the call. It can also be heard on the Mountaineers Sports Network with Andrew Caridi and Jake Weghorst on all radio affiliates as well as the Varsity Network, WVU Gameday App, and WVUSports.com.
The Mountaineers enter the regional with a 33-22 overall record and finished fourth in the Big 12 at 19-11. It is the 15th regional appearance in program history and the fourth under head coach Randy Mazey, having also reached in 2017, 2019, and 2023. It is also the first time the Mountaineers have made back-to-back regional appearances since 1961-64.
Senior Derek Clark and junior JJ Wetherholt were named to the All-Big 12 first team while senior Reed Chumley earned a spot on the second team. Juniors Aidan Major and Kyle West along with sophomore Sam White earned honorable mention status.
Clark will get the start against DBU on Friday after going 7-2 this season with a 3.05 ERA and 73 strikeouts. He leads the Mountaineers with 79.2 innings pitched despite missing the first month of the season. Clark will go up against Ryan Johnson who is 11-2 with a 1.98 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 100.0 innings for the Patriots.
Wetherholt leads the Mountaineers with a .356 batting average and 1.163 OPS. He has added eight home runs, eight doubles, and 30 RBI despite missing 24 games due to a hamstring injury. Chumley paces West Virginia with 15 home runs and 45 RBI.
DBU enters the regional with a 44-13 record after winning the Conference USA tournament championship. One of the premier mid-major programs in the country, the Patriots are making their 10th straight regional appearance. The Patriots are the only school in the country where just their baseball team competes at the Division I level as all their other athletic programs are Division II.
As a team, the Patriots have hit 111 home runs led by 21 from Grant Jay and 16 from Chayton Krauss. Krauss also leads the team with 64 RBI.
Johnson is the ace of the staff while Conner Mackay is the top reliever with a 2.22 ERA and eight saves out of the bullpen in 22 appearances.
