Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team split a doubleheader with Charlotte on Saturday, winning the opener, 8-1, before falling in the second game, 3-2. The Mountaineers are now 4-3 on the season while the 49ers go to 3-4.
 
Sophomore Logan Sauve went 4-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI, and three runs scored in game one to lead the Mountaineers to the victory. On the mound, junior Tyler Switalski allowed just one run in 4.2 innings to earn his first win while redshirt sophomore David Hagaman and sophomore Cole Fehrman combined to throw 2.1 scoreless innings in relief to close out the seven-inning affair.
 
In game two, sophomore Sam White had two hits including his first home run of the season. Senior Hayden Cooper suffered the loss, allowing three runs in 3.2 innings. Freshman Joseph Fredericks and redshirt sophomore Tommy Beam threw 2.1 scoreless innings to cap off an unblemished day for the WVU bullpen.
 
Sauve got the Mountaineers on the board early in game one with a solo home run in the first inning. Junior Grant Hussey hit his third home run of the season in the second to double the WVU lead before Sauve added an RBI single and sophomore Benjamin Lumsden walked with the bases loaded.
 
In the fourth, Sauve smacked his second home run of the game, a moonshot over the trees in left field to extend the Mountaineer lead to 5-0.
 
The 49ers got on the board in the home half of the fourth, but Sauve provided more cushion in the sixth with a two-run double, just missing his third home run of the game. The sophomore catcher then came around to score on a double from White.
 
In the second game, Sauve recorded his fifth consecutive hit with a double in the first before coming around to score on White's first home run of the season.
 
Charlotte got one run back in the second on a solo home run before taking the lead with two runs in the fourth.
 
The Mountaineers threatened with two runners on in both the sixth and seventh inning but could not push across the tying run.
 
The Mountaineers will look to clinch the series tomorrow afternoon at Hayes Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
