Mountaineers Outlast Georgia State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite enduring three hours of miscellaneous delays, the No. 6 West Virginia University men's soccer team came away victorious over Georgia State, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 10-1-3 and 5-0-1 in Sun Belt play while the Panthers fall to 3-7-4 and 0-4-2 in conference play.

Graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro and senior Max Trethewey each found the back of the net for West Virginia. For Ors Navarro, it was his team-leading 12th goal of the season while it was the first goal of Trethewey's career in his 59th appearance for the Mountaineers.

Freshman Isaac Scheer, sophomore Constantinos Christou, and senior Carlos Hernando each collected assists on the night.

Overall, WVU outshot Georgia State, 15-5, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The game was delayed 1 hour, 45 minutes due to a light stanchion not working, but the Mountaineers came out swinging once things got underway, firing five shots in the first 20 minutes of action. In the 29th minute, WVU got on the board as Hernando sent a cross to Scheer, who laid the ball down for Ors Navarro. The Castellon, Spain native took a shot that got through the goalkeeper's hands and the Mountaineers on the board.

In the 50th minute, Christou sent a ball across the box where Trethewey was waiting by the far post to slide and knock the ball into the net, scoring what proved to be the game winner.

The Panthers responded immediately, getting on the board just 50 seconds later.

After playing another 13 minutes, lightning approached the area, forcing an hour-long delay as rain poured down at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The Mountaineers had a couple of chances after the delay, including three shots by senior Otto Ollikainen, but could not find an insurance goal. The one-goal lead proved to be enough, however, as the WVU defense held Georgia State without a shot for the final 34 minutes of the contest.

West Virginia will hit the road for its next match on Sunday, Oct. 27 against James Madison with kickoff from Harrisonburg, Virginia set for 7 p.m. The Mountaineers could clinch a top two finish in the Sun Belt with a victory over the Dukes and secure one of the two hosting slots for the Sun Belt Tournament.
