Mountaineers Even Record to 1-1 With Blowout Victory Over Duquesne

Quarterback Garrett Greene threw four first-half touchdown passes, three to Martinsburg freshman Hudson Clement, before giving way to freshman Nicco Marchiol at the beginning of the third quarter.
Greene's night consisted of 10 completions in 18 attempts for 240 yards and five rushes for 33 yards while Clement caught five Greene aerials for 177 yards and three touchdowns.
Clement, who got the surprise start minutes before kickoff when Devin Carter was a late scratch, earned a scholarship after tonight's performance.
"Devin got stepped on toward the end of Wednesday's practice and we felt like he was going to be able to play and he just didn't look very good during pregame," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. "Hudson got the start probably in the best way possible. Life is about opportunities. What do you do with your opportunities? He went out and made five catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns and he earned a scholarship.
"Battle time promotion," Brown added.
"I called them right after the news, mom was crying and everything," Clement said of being awarded his full ride.
Lightning in the area forced the game's stoppage in the second quarter at 7:13 p.m. EDT with 8:14 showing on the game clock and the Mountaineers leading 14-10. Fans were instructed to seek cover and most of the 50,037 announced for tonight's home opener chose not to return. Following a delay of nearly two hours, the two teams returned to the field at 8:52 p.m. and resumed play at 9:07 p.m.
The contest finally ended at 11:10 p.m., more than five hours after it started.
WVU stopped Duquesne (1-1) on the game's opening possession but the Dukes got the football back when Michael Beraducci's short punt bounced backward and hit the leg of Jacolby Spells. Duquesne recovered on the West Virginia 46.
Three plays later, Darius Perrantes flipped a pass downfield to a wide-open Darryl Powell Jr., who got behind Andrew Wilson-Lamp and caught the ball on his back in the end zone for a 38-yard touchdown.
Two possessions later, West Virginia evened things up when it used a short field as a result of Beraducci's short punt to drive for 46 yards to pay dirt. After CJ Donaldson Jr. got just enough yardage to extend the drive on third and 6, Jaylen Anderson ran 15 yards to the Dukes' 21.
Rodney Gallagher II's 7-yard reverse set up Greene's 14-yard scoring strike to Clement for his first collegiate catch and touchdown.
A Beanie Bishop interception along the far sideline gave West Virginia the ball at its own 6, and the Mountaineers quickly got out of minus territory when Jayden Johnson was flagged for a face mask penalty, giving WVU a fresh set of downs at its 23.
Two plays later, Greene hit Clement down the near sideline for a 39-yard gainer to the Duquesne 38. A Kole Taylor reception for 10 yards on third and 6 moved the ball to the 32, and another Taylor catch for 16 yards placed it at the 8. Here, Anderson ran to his left untouched into the end zone, giving WVU a 14-7 lead with 14:40 left in the second quarter.
Then, immediately after Brian Bruzdewicz's 39-yard field goal had reduced West Virginia's lead to 14-10, a weather delay was issued.
When play resumed, it took WVU just three plays to score.
Following the kickoff, Anderson's first-down run netted 12 yards and Greene carried for 3. After a holding penalty, Clement ran right past Duquesne cornerback Javon Colston down the far sideline and Greene hit him in stride for a 70-yard touchdown.
Clement completed the first-half hat trick when he faked a block on a receiver screen to Gallagher and kept running. Greene made an easy throw to him down the far sideline for a 46-yard touchdown. Michael Hayes' conversion kick made it 28-10.
Preston Fox extended West Virginia's lead to 35-10 when he caught Greene's pass in stride for a 22-yard touchdown, capping a seven-play, 63-yard scoring drive that consumed just 2:11 of clock time.
Halftime was eliminated because of the long delay, which meant Duquesne immediately kicked off to West Virginia after the Mountaineers' forced the Dukes into a three-and-out possession to end the second quarter.
It took West Virginia three possessions before it returned to the end zone with 4:40 left in the third quarter when freshman Jahiem White blew past a Nick Malone block and raced 19 yards for his first collegiate touchdown.
White showed great burst on an earlier run by streaking 39 yards down the near sideline to the Duquesne 17, but that drive ended when Gallagher fumbled the football out of the end zone while trying to extend the ball after catching Marchiol's sideline pass.
White rushed for a game-high 110 yards on just 12 carries.
Perrantes, who completed 14 of his 31 pass attempts for 220 yards, got the Dukes back into the end zone with 1:02 left in the third quarter, passing 45 yards to Tedy Afful to WVU 16. He then went right back to Afful in the back of the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown.
Avery Wilcox's 34-yard interception return to the Duquesne 20 put WVU into position to cross the goal line once again. Marchiol eventually did the honors from the 1 on fourth and goal, and Danny King's conversion kick made it 49-17.
Freshman D.J. Oliver tallied the game's final score with 2:08 remaining when he scored from the 5 for his first collegiate touchdown.
Defensively, Tomiwa Durojaiye, Jared Bartlett and Hershey McLaurin combined for West Virginia's two sacks. The Mountaineers were credited with 14 tackles for losses.
Seven different ball carriers combined to rush for 304 yards and the Mountaineers finished the night with 619 yards of total offense.
Duquesne ended the night with 234 total yards, 231 of that coming through the air.
"It's concerning," Brown said of his team's pass defense. "We've got to be better in the secondary. The hope was to bring in some veterans and fix that and quite frankly we haven't done that through two games. We've got to go back to the drawing board. Some of it is when it's time to go play, we've got to make plays."
With tonight's win, West Virginia improves to 21-0 all-time versus FCS teams.
WVU (1-1) remains at Milan Puskar Stadium next Saturday night with the Backyard Brawl making its return to Morgantown after a 12-year hiatus. Last year, the Panthers defeated West Virginia 38-31 in Pittsburgh. Pitt lost 27-21 to Cincinnati earlier this evening.
No tickets remain for next Saturday's game.
