MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia sophomore second baseman has added another accolade following his stellar season as he has been named a First-Team All-American by Baseball America, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
It is the sixth first-team honor this year for Wetherholt having also been named to All-America teams from the NCBWA, ABCA, Perfect Game, College Baseball Foundation, and Collegiate Baseball News. He was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year, NCBWA District 2 Player of the Year, a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and Bobby Bragan Award, a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, a CSC First-Team Academic All-American, and ABCA First-Team All-East Region.
Wetherholt becomes the first Mountaineer to be named to the first team by six different publications, surpassing the mark of five set by Alek Manoah in 2019.
The Mars, Pennsylvania native led the NCAA with a .449 batting average this season, becoming the first Big 12 player since Ken Harvey of Nebraska in 1999 to lead the country, while also contributing with 16 home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 60 RBI, 67 runs scored, and 36 stolen bases. He is one of just two players this season to have at least 15 home runs and 35 stolen bases and is also the first Division I player since 2002 to have 35 stolen bases and 40 extra-base hits.
Wetherholt is the 4th Mountaineer to be named an All-American by Baseball America and just the second to be named to the first team, joining Manoah in 2019. He is the 25th player in team history to be named an All-American, and the Baseball America accolade is the 62nd overall All-America honor in program history. He now has six of WVU's 15 total first-team awards.
Out of West Virginia's 62 total All-America accolades, 31 have come since 2015 and 32 have been since coach Randy Mazey arrived in Morgantown in 2013.
