
Mountaineers Fall to Columbia in Series Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23 West Virginia University baseball team dropped the series opener against Columbia, 7-4, Friday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers fall to 8-3 while the Lions improve to 2-5.
West Virginia managed just five hits in the game with no single player have more than one. Sophomore Gavin Kelly and junior Tyrus Hall each had an RBI while graduate student Brodie Kresser scored two runs.
Junior Dawson Montesa suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 4.0 innings while striking out five. Graduate student Ian Korn struck out three and allowed a run in 3.0 innings while graduate student Reeser Bassinger allowed a run in 2.0 innings of work.
Columbia had its big inning in the second as the Lions scored five runs on five hits and a pair of walks. They added a run in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead before the Mountaineers got on the board in the home half of the fifth on a groundout and an error.
Junior Armani Guzman came home to score in the sixth on a wild pitch before a sacrifice fly by Kelly in the seventh made it a two-run game. Columbia answered with a run in the ninth to go back up three. Senior Brock Wills led off the bottom of the ninth with a triple, but that was all WVU could muster in the final frame.
The Mountaineers will look to even the series on Saturday with first pitch set for noon.
