MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University wrestling coach
Tim Flynn has announced the team award winners for the 2022-23 season, recognizing the team leaders in takedowns, falls and wins, as well as the Rookie of the Year, Most Improved, Mountain Man and Most Outstanding Wrestler awards.
Most Takedowns: Peyton Hall – 80
- Scored the 80 takedowns in 30 matches
- Gave up just 15 all season
Most Falls: Peyton Hall – 9
- Up five falls from last season and just one from his freshman year
Most Wins: Caleb Dowling – 25
- Final record was 25-6
- Won two open tournaments: Purple Raider and Mat-Town II Open
- Took second place at the Southeast Open and third place at the Bobby Kaufman Open
- Finished undefeated in duals this year: 3-0
Rookie of The Year: Brody Conley
- Went 15-4 this season
- Won the Southeast Open
- Took third place at the prestigious Midlands Championships
- Broke into the FloWrestling national rankings after Midlands
- Had wins over two NCAA qualifiers and nationally ranked wrestlers (Alex Cramer, Cael Valencia)
- Went 3-0 at the Mountaineer Quad, picking up wins over Glenville State, Edinboro and Northern Colorado
Most Improved Wrestler: Scott Joll
- Finished16-11 on the year, with all but two of those losses coming to NCAA qualifiers (one was injury default & the other was to a previous NCAA qualifier)
- Had wins over NCAA qualifiers: Turley (Rutgers – former All-American), Worthing (Clarion). Also, recorded wins over nationally ranked Broderson (Iowa State – twice) and Darrien Roberts (Oklahoma)
- Placed at the Big 12 Championship for the first time in his career (had previously never won a match in first two appearances at the tournament)
- Broke into the national rankings for the first time in his career following the Big 12 Championship
Mountain Man Award: Killian Cardinale
- Tore his ACL on October 21st
- Decided not to have surgery and wrestle through it
- Wrestled first match on December 29
- Tore his meniscus in other knee on February 9
- Had surgery on meniscus on February 16
- Wrestled first match after meniscus surgery on March 16
- Became the 35th All-American in program history and just the eighth wrestler in program history to become a two-time All-American
- Made the President's List (4.0 GPA) during both semesters last year and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in communication sciences and disorders
- Accumulated a 3.91 GPA this year while earning a master's degree in Business Administration
Most Outstanding Wrestler: Killian Cardinale
- Finished 13-4 (One loss was injury default at Big 12s)
- Took a 10-0 overall record into Big 12s
- 35th All-American in program history
- Eighth wrestler in program history to become a two-time All-American
- Earned All-America status out of the No. 28 seed, as he beat the No. 5, No 15 and No. 21 seeds to place at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
