TULSA, Okla. – Junior Peyton Hall led the way for the West Virginia University wrestling team by advancing to the semifinals at 165 pounds, to conclude the first session of the 2023 Big 12 Championship at the BOK Center in Tulsa.
No. 4-seed Hall pinned No. 5-seed Gerrit Nijenhuis of Oklahoma in 4:38 to set up a clash with top-seeded David Carr of Iowa State for a spot in the championship match on Sunday night.
After receiving a first-round bye, the Chester, West Virginia, native scored the first take down of the match and then turned his second takedown into a four-point near fall to carry over a 8-1 lead into the second period. There, Hall pulled off a reversal and eventually sealed the fall and a spot in the semifinals for the second consecutive year.
Senior Scott Joll (174) and redshirt juniors Anthony Carman (184) and Michael Wolfgram (HWT) each picked up a victory in their opening-round matchups prior to dropping their quarterfinal bouts to send them into Wrestlebacks. Wolfgram scored a 7-4 decision over Utah Valley's Chris Trussell at heavyweight to force a rematch of last year's quarterfinals matchup against No. 4 seed AJ Nevills of South Dakota State in which the latter escaped with a 4-3 decision. Nevills once again held on to escape with a 3-2 victory over the York, Pennsylvania, native.
At 141 pounds, redshirt freshman Jordan Titus also earned a first-round win in his Big 12 Championship debut. Titus, the No. 8 seed, caught Air Force's Garrett Kuchan in a cradle for six points from a takedown which turned into a four-point near fall. The Center Moriches, New York, native added three more points during the bout to claim a 9-3 decision over Kuchan, before falling to top-seeded Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado in the quarterfinals.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Davin Rhoads (133), junior Sam Hillegas (149), redshirt senior Alex Hornfeck (157), and redshirt sophomore Austin Cooley (197) will compete in consolation brackets to clinch automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
Session two will showcase the semifinals as well as all three consolation rounds at 6 p.m. ET. Fans can continue to watch all of the championship action on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and follow along with live stats on TrackWrestling.
