TULSA, Okla. – Following two sessions of non-stop action inside the BOK Center on Saturday, six members of the West Virginia University wrestling team remain in contention for a top-eight finish at their respective weight classes.
Junior Peyton Hall challenges Wyoming's Cole Moody for a spot in the third-place bout at 165 pounds. The Chester, West Virginia, native fell to top-seeded David Carr of Iowa State in the semifinals, as Carr escaped with a two-point victory.
After the pair went scoreless in the first period, Carr escaped to take a one-point lead in the second, before Hall responded with an escape of his own to tie it up at 1-1 midway through the third. With 27 seconds left in the match, the Cyclone secured the necessary takedown on the Mountaineer to seal the win.
Additionally, redshirt freshman Jordan Titus (141), senior Scott Joll (174), redshirt sophomore Austin Cooley (197) and redshirt junior Michael Wolfgram (HWT) each head into battle for seventh place, while junior Sam Hillegas returns to action for the vacant eighth spot at 149 pounds.
A spot became available after Wyoming's Chase Zollmann was disqualified for biting No. 6 seed Mitch Moore of Oklahoma, the same wrestler who allegedly head-butted Hillegas in the Mountaineers' three-point loss to the Sooners back in January.
