TULSA, Okla. – Four members of the West Virginia University wrestling team advance to day two of the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"Any win in this tournament is a good win," fifth-year WVU coach Tim Flynn said. "We have four guys in the second day of the tournament and just have to keep moving forward."
After taking down No. 5-seed Caleb Smith of Appalachian State in session one, fifth-year senior Killian Cardinale began the second session by scoring a five-point victory over No. 21-seed Jore Volk of Wyoming to punch his ticket to the quarterfinals for the second straight year.
Cardinale locked in a single-leg on Volk and eventually took him down for a 2-1 advantage, as Volk escaped to get within one heading into the second period. The Bristow, Virginia, native limited the Cowboy to two points the rest of the way, while tacking on two more takedowns to claim a 8-3 decision and a quarterfinal match against No. 4-seed Matt Ramos of Purdue.
Following Cardinale's win, redshirt freshman Jordan Titus recorded the first tournament win of his college career in the form of a 4-1 decision against No. 13-seed Carter Young of Oklahoma State at 141 pounds. Titus and Young scrambled to the far right of the circle, which eventually led to the Mountaineer gaining control of the Cowboy's legs for the takedown. He escaped in the early stages of the second period and then added
point for riding time to seal the win.
Junior Peyton Hall (165) and redshirt junior Michael Wolfgram (HWT) also earned victories in the first round of consolations. Hall outlasted No. 30-seed Evan Barczak of Drexel for a 4-3 decision, while Wolfgram gained two takedowns in the final two periods to close out day one with a 6-3 victory over No. 24-seed Boone Mcdermott of Rutgers.
