Mountaineers Advance to Round of 16 with Shutout of Louisville

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 5 West Virginia University men's soccer team advanced in the NCAA Tournament with a 1-0 second-round victory over Louisville at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sunday. The Mountaineers improve to 15-2-4 on the season, tying a program record for wins.
West Virginia will play the winner of the UCF-Vermont second-round matchup on Saturday, Nov. 25 in Morgantown with kickoff set for 4 p.m. Tickets for the third-round matchup with go on sale at wvugame.com at 10 a.m. on Monday morning.
Senior Yutaro Tsukada scored the game winner in the second half while senior Jackson Lee made four saves in goal to collect his ninth clean sheet of the season. Junior Carlos Hernando added an assist as well.
For Tsukada, it was his 10th goal of the season and his fifth in the last five games to go along with his team-leading nine assists this year.
The Mountaineers outshout Louisville, 17-7, with shots on goal even at four. WVU also took six corner kicks while not conceding any to the Cardinals.
Both teams had golden opportunities in the first half. In the 22nd minute, sophomore Marcus Caldeira had a clean header that looked destined for the back of the net, but Louisville goalkeeper Alex Svetanoff made a lunging save. Just a few minutes later, Parker Forbes took a shot for the Cardinals that got past Lee, but Hernando was there to clear the ball off the line.
In the second half, the Mountaineers kept searching for the breakthrough goal and outshot the Cardinals, 10-2, in the half. In the 72nd minute, Tsukada found it, taking a pass from Hernando before making a move and taking a left-footed shot at the top of the box, slotting it past the keeper and into the lower right corner of the net.
The Cardinals managed just one more shot on goal the rest of the game, but Lee was there to make the save and secure the shutout victory.
