October 08, 2023 08:13 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3 West Virginia University men's soccer team came back twice to earn a 2-2 draw with James Madison on Sunday at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers go to 8-0-4 on the season and 1-0-3 in Sun Belt action while the Dukes are now 4-3-4 and 0-2-2 in conference play.
The result extends WVU's unbeaten streak to 12 games, the longest in program history to begin a season.
Junior Frederik Jorgensen scored his first goal of the season for the Mountaineers while senior Sergio Ors Navarro added his fourth of the year. Junior Dante Huckaby and senior Yutaro Tsukada each collected assists in the contest. Tsukada now has eight assists on the season, the most in the Sun Belt and second-most in the country.
The Mountaineers outshot James Madison, 11-9, while the Dukes had a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. JMU also had a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
After James Madison opened the scoring in the 28th minute, the Mountaineers answered in the 34th minute as Jorgensen took a free kick from just outside the box and sent a left-footed shot into the top-left corner of the net.
In the second half, the Dukes retook the lead in the 51st minute on a goal from Cameron Arnold.
In the 63rd minute, the Mountaineers responded as Tsukada left the ball for Huckaby on the right wing for a cross into the box towards the head of Ors Navarro, who flicked it past the keeper to even the game at two.
The Mountaineers kept the pressure up, firing off five shots in the final 15 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.
James Madison had one final chance in the 87th minute as Arnold got past the WVU defense and fired a shot at senior Jackson Lee, but the Mountaineer goalie stood his ground to make his fifth save of the night.
West Virginia will now hit the road to take on South Carolina on Thursday night. Kickoff from Columbia is set for 7 p.m.
