Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Oct. 4, 2023) – The No. 3 West Virginia University men's soccer team wrapped up an unbeaten non-conference season on Wednesday evening, drawing 1-1 with Loyola Maryland at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers go to 8-0-3 on the year while the Greyhounds are now 3-2-7.
 
The 11-game unbeaten streak for the Mountaineers sets a new program record to begin a season.
 
West Virginia scored on an own goal by Loyola, the first time the Mountaineers have benefitted from an own goal since the 2022 season opener against Robert Morris
 
The Mountaineers outshot the Greyhounds, 12-4, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.
 
In the 24^th minute, West Virginia got on the board as senior Yutaro Tsukada sent the ball in front of the net where a Loyola defender slid to try to clear it away but ended up knocking it into his own net.
 
About 10 minutes later, the Greyhounds evened up the match on a goal by Giovanni Marquina.
 
In the second half, the Mountaineers came out energized and had a couple of chances in the 47^th minute, starting with a header off the crossbar by sophomore Marcus Caldeira. The rebound came to Tsukada, who tried a scissor kick, but his shot was knocked away by a defender.
 
Tsukada had another great chance in the 66^th minute, taking a shot from the edge of the box that bounced off the left post and into the hands of the Loyola keeper. Tsukada had another chance a few minutes later, but his shot was saved.
 
Neither team managed a shot on goal the rest of the contest as the night ended in a draw.
 
The Mountaineers will return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium this Sunday against James Madison. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. as the second game of a doubleheader with the WVU women's team
