TULSA, Okla. – After two sessions of non-stop action inside the BOK Center on Saturday, two members of the West Virginia University wrestling team remain in contention for a Big 12 Championship, with five others vying for a top-seven finish in their respective weight classes.
"I thought that we wrestled pretty well overall," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We have a number of guys placing that were unseeded. It's just a roller-coaster tournament."
Redshirt senior Killian Cardinale (2) and sophomore Peyton Hall (3) combined for five wins throughout the day to earn a spot into the finals at 125 pounds and 165 pounds, respectively, while redshirt sophomore Jeffrey Boyd (149), redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck (157), sophomore Dennis Robin (174), redshirt sophomore Anthony Carman (184), and redshirt sophomore Michael Wolfgram (HWT) prepare to compete for a seventh-place finish in the first session of Sunday's championship action.
To kick off the semifinals, Cardinale took down No. 4 seed Trevor Mastrogiovanni twice in the first period to take a three-point lead (4-1) into the second. He added five more points throughout the bout to seal his place in the finals behind a 9-2 decision.
The Bristow, Virginia, native battles No. 3 seed Brody Teske (Northern Iowa) in a rematch from their most recent faceoff on Feb. 5, where Cardinale scored a 12-2 major decision over Teske thanks to four takedowns and a two-point near fall.
Then, Hall secured a 4-1 decision over No. 3 seed Austin Yant (Northern Iowa) to claim a spot in the 165-pound championship match and a rematch with No. 1 seed Keegan O'Toole.
