AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University wrestling team dropped Friday night's dual to No. 5 Iowa State, 31-9, in front of 3,654 fans that packed the Hilton Coliseum.
"Our fight was better, but some guys were a little flat," fourth-year coach
Tim Flynn said.
WVU (5-6, 0-4 Big 12) jumped out to a 9-0 lead after rattling off two-straight victories at 165 and 174 pounds to open the dual. ISU (12-1, 5-0 Big 12) responded with eight-straight victories to extend its win streak to ten.
The highlight of the night for the Mountaineers came at 174 pounds, where sophomore
Dennis Robin stunned the capacity crowd by pinning No. 17 Joel Devine in 1:09 for the fastest fall of the night.
Robin didn't waste any time as he shot for Devine's legs and flipped him upside down to secure the takedown. From there, the Arlington, New York, native hooked in the cradle and slowly cemented his opponent's shoulders to the mat for the win. It marked Robin's first pin and second ranked win of the 2022 campaign.
Prior to Robin's performance, sophomore
Peyton Hall pulled out a 4-3 decision over No. 29 Isaac Judge to improve to 19-2 overall. Hall took down Judge and then allowed him to instantly escape, as the sophomore held a 2-1 lead after one. The Chester, West Virginia, native earned two more points from a reversal and hung on for the one-point victory. Judge escaped to get within one with a minute left in the third but couldn't complete the takedown in time.
No. 23
Michael Wolfgram found himself in back-and-forth scramble with No. 21 Sam Schuyler (ISU) at heavyweight. After the two wrestlers went scoreless in the first, Wolfgram gained a takedown and Schuyler registered two escapes to close out the second period tied at 2-2.
In the third, Wolfgram and Schuyler switched roles as Schuyler scored the takedown, while Wolfgram escaped twice to force overtime. Both competitors went for their respective maneuvers, but it was Schuyler who would come out on top with a takedown to seal the victory.
Next up, West Virginia squares off with No. 22 Northern Iowa on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 8 p.m. ET.
