MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Mountaineer football is planning a fun, educational morning for area youth this Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to noon, local youth are invited to participate in a Black History Month Event inside the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.
Some West Virginia University players will be on hand to do readings and take part in educational games and contests that will be tied to historical events.
For instance, children playing red light-green light will also learn more about Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the traffic light, or a paper airplane toss that includes learning more about the famous Tuskegee Airmen – the first Black aviators who took part in World War II.
One of the readings will focus on the amazing life of West Virginia native Katherine Johnson, whose participation in the space program was profiled in the book and movie "Hidden Figures."
"This will be a way for the community to engage with some of our student-athletes in a different light," Paige Diggs, WVU's assistant athletics director for diversity, equity and inclusion and director of Mountaineer football's 5th Quarter Program said. "We want to make this a fun experience for everyone."
Diggs said this is a free event but per NCAA rules, only children eighth grade and under are eligible to participate. Parents are also welcome to stay and learn more about some of the area Black-owned businesses that have signed up to participate in Saturday's event.
"There is no cost and no obligation for this. It's just an opportunity to come to the football facility for a couple of hours, meet some of our players, have some fun and learn," Diggs said.
Registration will begin at 9:45 a.m.
