HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – On the final day of the 2022 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships, freshman Brody Conley captured a third-place finish to lead the West Virginia University wrestling team on Friday night inside the NOW Arena.
Conley, competing unattached, outlasted Navy Prep's Daniel Wask for a 3-1 decision to ensure his spot in the top three at 174 pounds.
He registered two late takedowns to secure pair of decisions over Wisconsin's Josh Otto (5-1) and Illinois' Trey Sizemore (4-2), leading up to a 12-0 major decision over Central Michigan's Alex Cramer to clinch a berth in the third-place match against Wask.
The Tiffin, Ohio, native's finish marked the fourth time a Mountaineer took third at the annual event in program history and first since All-American Matt Lebe in 2005.
After going 3-0 on day one to earn a spot in the semifinals, fifth-year senior Killian Cardinale decided to take a medical default in the next two matches and close out his return in sixth place at 125 pounds. Like Cardinale, redshirt junior Anthony Carman added a sixth-place finish at 184 pounds to close out the tournament.
Junior Sam Hillegas (149) and senior Scott Joll (174) completed their runs at the midseason classic with losses in the consolation rounds of their respective weight brackets. Redshirt junior Michael Wolfgram also dropped a hard-fought, 4-3 decision to No. 7 Yaraslau Slavikouski of Harvard in round four of the consolations at heavyweight.
As a team, West Virginia finished in 12th place with 49.0 points. No. 15 and host Northwestern took first (122.0), followed by Penn and No. 21 Pitt in a tie for second (115.0), No. 11 Wisconsin in fourth (114.5), and Illinois (104.5) in fifth to round out the top five.
Up Next, WVU opens the new year against Ohio at the WVU Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 6. The dual is set for 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on Big 12 Now.
