WVU Meets No. 20 Oklahoma on New Year’s Eve

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team opens its 2022-23 Big 12 Conference slate on Saturday, Dec. 31, as the Mountaineers play host to No. 20/18 Oklahoma inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
Tipoff against the Sooners is set for 2 p.m. ET, with gates opening at 1 p.m. The New Year's Eve contest against OU will be broadcast live on the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 100.9 WSZT-FM, with Andrew Caridi and John Antonik on the call. Fans also can listen to the game on the Varsity Network App.
Additionally, Saturday's game will be broadcast on Big 12 Now, with Eric Little and Warren Baker on the call. Live stats and game notes will be available on WVUsports.com.
Tickets for Saturday's contest can be purchased at WVUGAME.com or by visiting the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located inside the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. Fans are welcomed to ring in the New Year with the Mountaineers for the Big 12 Conference home opener. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a 2023 WVU women's basketball themed desk calendar.
Saturday's contest marks the 25th all-time meeting between WVU (9-2) and OU (10-1). Oklahoma leads the series, 14-10; however, the two teams are tied, 5-5, when playing in Morgantown.
The Sooners have won their last three matchups against the Mountaineers, dating back to Feb. 13, 2021, in Morgantown (72-71). WVU's last victory over OU came on Jan. 3, 2021, at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman (90-72).
Oklahoma enters Saturday's contest with a 10-1 record. What's more, OU has won its last seven games, dating back to Nov. 20, against UT Arlington (89-80). The Sooners only loss this season came on Nov. 16, at Utah by a score of 124-78, and the Utes currently rank No. 11 in both the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls.
Oklahoma's roster features four players who are averaging double digits in scoring this season. The Sooners' offensive attack is led by Madi Williams, who is averaging a team-high 16.5 points per game.
Williams is joined in double figures by Skylar Vann (11.4), Taylor Robertson (10.4) and Nevaeh Tot (10.0). Additionally, Ana Llanusa is averaging 9.0 points per game for OU this year.
Vann paces Oklahoma in the rebounding category, with 7.0 boards per game.
OU leads the Big 12 in scoring and is averaging 87.5 points per game this season. Moreover, the Sooners have notched at least 80 points in seven games this year, including a 105-point game in the season opener vs. Oral Roberts on Nov. 7.
West Virginia is coming off a pair of wins at the 2022 West Palm Beach Invitational, from Dec. 20-21. The Mountaineers defeated Georgia, 49-45, in comeback fashion on Dec. 20, to open the event. WVU closed out its time in West Palm Beach with an 82-51 win over Miami (Ohio) on Dec. 21.
Fifth-year senior guard Madisen Smith continues to pace West Virginia in scoring, at 13 points per game. She is joined in double figures by sophomore guard JJ Quinerly (10.7 ppg).
