Box Score ROUND ROCK, Texas – The No. 4-seed West Virginia University women's soccer team claimed its fifth Big 12 Tournament title with a 1-0, double-overtime win over No. 2-seed TCU in the 2022 Big 12 Championship Finals at Round Rock Multipurpose Complex in Round Rock, Texas, on Sunday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (10-4-7) earned their 10th overall Big 12 title on Sunday, including their first since 2018. WVU has now won four conference titles in the last six seasons, dating back to 2016 when it won the regular-season and tournament titles. Overall, coach
Nikki Izzo-Brown has led West Virginia to 18 conference championships in 27 seasons as the program's only head coach.
Of note, the Mountaineers are undefeated all-time in the Big 12 Championship Final, with five appearances and five victories since joining the conference in 2012.
"Amazing is the word that comes to mind," Izzo-Brown said. "I'm just amazed at what these women were able to do and how they performed. I was just so proud of them. It was a hard-fought battle and to get a clean sheet against a talented TCU team and find a way to win was so impressive. I'm just so excited for them."
West Virginia earned the conference crown after a goal from fifth-year senior defender
Jordan Brewster in the 93rd minute. Early in the first overtime period, WVU earned a free kick from about 90 yards out after TCU was whistled for a foul. Brewster took the kick with the wind at her back, sending a long, powerful ball over the awaiting players. It sailed toward the goal and took a big bounce that went over the TCU keeper's head for the go-ahead score.
With this year's new overtime rules that eliminated the golden goal, the two teams played out the remainder of the two, 10-minute overtime periods. TCU fired three shots in the remaining minutes, but the Mountaineers were able to play keep-away and run out time on the clock to walk away victorious.
In the final stats, TCU just edged WVU, 11-10, in shots, while also leading the Mountaineers, 7-4, in shots on goal. West Virginia earned six corner kicks, compared to nine for the Horned Frogs. Senior goalkeeper
Kayza Massey registered a career-high tying seven saves, her third seven-save performance of the campaign, to earn her ninth shutout of the season.
Junior midfielder
AJ Rodriguez paced the offense with a pair of shots, while Brewster was labeled the hero with her fifth career game-winning goal, as well as second of the Big 12 Championship.
Following the conclusion of the game, Brewster was named the tournament's Defensive Most Outstanding Player, while fifth-year senior forward
Lauren Segalla was recognized as the Offensive Most Outstanding Player. In addition to her two game-winning goals, Brewster also helped the Mountaineer defense record shutouts in two of the team's three Big 12 Tournament matches. Segalla also tallied a game-winning goal during the championship, while she scored in two of three tournament games.
Brewster earned WVU's fifth defensive MVP nod all time, as she becomes the third different Mountaineer to garner the award. Segalla's offensive MVP award also is the fifth for West Virginia all time, and she is the fourth different Mountaineer to receive the honor.
Additionally, West Virginia's all-time advantage over TCU moves to 10-3-3, including 3-1-1 in the Big 12 Tournament. Sunday's win marked the second time WVU has topped the Horned Frogs in the championship game to win the Big 12 Tournament title.
After earing the Big 12 Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament, the Mountaineers will find out their fate in the 2022 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Monday, Nov. 7, during the 2022 NCAA Selection Show. The show will air on NCAA.com at 4 p.m. ET. West Virginia is set to make its 22nd appearance in the national tournament, having earned a spot in 22 of the last 23 seasons.
