MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fairmont Senior High is well-represented on this year's All-Big 12 Football teams, announced today.
Polar Bear products Zach Frazier and Dante Stills were named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while West Virginia University teammate Bryce Ford-Wheaton secured second-team status on the two teams voted on by the conference coaches.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players. Sixty players were recognized on the two squads.
Stills capped an impressive career in 2022 by leading West Virginia with 4½ sacks and nine tackles for losses from his defensive tackle spot, despite being double- and triple-teamed all year long.
The senior set school records for career games played (59) and tackles for losses (52½), while his 23½ sacks were 2½ behind his father, Gary, for third place on the school's all-time sack list.
The 6-foot-4, 290-pounder established a career best with four assisted tackles and 17 sack yards in the season opener against Pitt and matched his career best with three TFLs in the Iowa State game. He forced fumbles in the Pitt and Oklahoma games and recovered a fumble in the season-ending victory at Oklahoma State.
Stills is a repeat first-team performer after earning a spot last year's squad. He also earned second-team status during his sophomore season in 2019.
Frazier's sophomore campaign at WVU was equally impressive. The 6-foot-3, 306-pounder led the team with 51 knockdown blocks and only permitted one sack in 882 total snaps this year. He was instrumental in the team's much-improved ground game that increased its season average from 121.5 yards per game in 2021 to 171.5 yards per outing in 2022.
West Virginia ran for more than 200 yards in all five victories this year, including 250 in the season-ending win at Oklahoma State. WVU ranked 14th in the country in red-zone offense and 28th in total first downs.
Frazier was a second team choice in 2021.
Meanwhile, Ford-Wheaton earned second-team status after finishing the regular season with team highs in receptions (62) and touchdown catches (seven). He posted career highs in catches (11) and yards (152) in the double-overtime loss to Kansas and also had strong performances in the Pitt and Texas games.
The junior finished the season tied with Marvin Harrison Jr. for second among Power 5 wide receivers with 18 contested catches. In 45 career games, the 6-foot-3, 224-pounder shows 143 catches for 1,867 yards and 15 touchdowns.
West Virginia's honorable mention choices were linebacker Jasir Cox, running back CJ Donaldson, wide receiver Sam James, defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, linebacker Lee Kpogba and offensive tackle Wyatt Milum.
West Virginia now shows 25 All-Big 12 First Team selections since joining the conference a decade ago.
TCU senior quarterback Max Duggan was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Kansas State junior defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah was tabbed as the league's top defensive player.
The Big 12's other major award winners include Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel (offensive newcomer of the year), TCU linebacker Johnny Hodges (Defensive Newcomer of the Year), Baylor running back Richard Reese (Offensive Freshman of the Year), Oklahoma State safety Kendal Daniels (Defensive Freshman of the Year), TCU returner Derius Davis (Special Teams Player of the Year), Kansas State tackle Cooper Beebe (Offensive Lineman of the Year) and Anudike-Uzomah (Defensive Lineman of the Year).
TCU's Sonny Dykes was named Chuck Neinas Coach of the Year after leading the third-ranked Horned Frogs to an undefeated regular season and a meeting against 10th-ranked Kansas State in this Saturday's Big 12 Championship game.
The Big 12 is the only conference in the country pitting two top-10 teams in its championship game this weekend.
