NORFOLK, Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team earned a 4-0 win over Old Dominion on Saturday night at the ODU Soccer Complex.
The Mountaineers scored twice in the opening 15 minutes to take control early, before they added two more tallies in the second half. Freshman forward Marcus Caldeira recorded a pair of goals in the win, including the game-winner in the ninth minute, while fifth-year senior forward Adam Burchell and redshirt senior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers also got on the score sheet for WVU.
The win was West Virginia's first as an affiliate member of the Sun Belt Conference. It also marked the club's first victory on the road this season.
WVU (3-6-2, 1-1-2 Sun Belt) opened the scoring with Caldeira's goal in the ninth minute. After junior forward Yutaro Tsukada sent a ball into the scoring area and Burchell kept the play alive inside the 6-yard box, Caldeira finished easily to put the Mountaineers up, 1-0. It marked the Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, native's first career goal.
The freshman found the back of the net again in the 14th minute to double the lead. Burchell played a ball from just past midfield to the streaking forward, who finished far post.
In the second half, Burchell, who was credited with two assists on Saturday, made it 3-0 when he flicked a ball over the ODU keeper's head for his first goal of the season in the 49th minute. Then, Dromers finished it off with a strike in the 58th off a feed from fifth-year senior defender Aaron Denk Gracia.
In all, WVU held an edge a 10-9 edge in shots, including 7-1 in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also had four corner kicks, to Old Dominion's three.
Dromers finished with four shots, including three on goal, while Caldeira registered three shot attempts. In goal, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Marc Bonnaire made his collegiate debut against the Monarchs (4-4-2, 1-1-1 Sun Belt) and made one save, as the Mountaineers earned their fourth shutout of the campaign.
With the win, WVU improved to 4-1-2 against Old Dominion in the all-time series, with all four wins coming on the road. Saturday marked the first meeting between the two schools since 2010, as well as just the second clash in the last 30 years.
Next up, West Virginia returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 11, against Lehigh. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is set for 7 p.m. ET.
