BROOKINGS, S.D. – The West Virginia University wrestling team fell to the No. 23 South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 23-16, inside Frost Arena, on Friday night.
WVU (5-4, 0-2 Big 12) held a 16-7 lead with four matches to go but could not hang on as nationally-ranked SDSU (10-2, 3-0 Big 12) swept the final four matches of the dual, which included a pin fall at 197 pounds that put them ahead for the first time all night (20-16).
"That one hurt," fourth-year coach Tim Flynn said. "We had a chance to beat a good team and let one slip away."
Redshirt senior Killian Cardinale led off with a 10-2 major decision over SDSU's Tanner Jordan. Cardinale, No. 6 in the first NCAA coaches' ranking at 125 pounds, registered a team-high four takedowns and improved to 7-0 on the season.
At 133 pounds, freshman Garett Lautzenheiser outlasted Gabriel Tagg (SDSU) to secure a 14-12 overtime decision for his second dual win of the season. The Louisville, Ohio, native found an opening and took down Tagg to gain the victory and extend the Mountaineers' lead to 7-0.
After losing back-to-back matches at 141 and 149, redshirt junior Alex Hornfeck scored a 4-0 shutout at 157 pounds to give WVU a 10-7 advantage heading into the intermission.
Out of the intermission, sophomore Peyton Hall pinned No. 27 Tanner Cook in 4:24 to boost WVU's lead to nine (16-7), before SDSU made its comeback. Hall, No. 9 in the first NCAA coaches' ranking at 165 pounds, recorded his fourth pin of the season to remain undefeated in duals (9-0) and improve to 4-1 against ranked opponents.
