MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf and junior right-hander Ryan Bergert of the West Virginia University baseball team were taken by the San Diego Padres in the 2021 MLB Draft on Monday.
Wolf was chosen by the club in the fourth round (129th overall), while Bergert was picked in the sixth round (190th overall). It marks the first time two Mountaineers were selected by the same team in a draft since Adam White and Tyler Kuhn by the Cleveland Indians in 2007.
With the selections, the Mountaineers have now had 100 overall draftees since the first MLB Draft in 1965, including 30 in the Randy Mazey era (2013-present). Wolf is WVU's eighth player to be taken in the top-five rounds, while Bergert joins him in becoming the 14th and 15th WVU players to be top-10-round picks.
Wolf finished 6-5 with a 3.03 ERA in 14 starts for the Mountaineers in 2021, earning All-Big 12 Second Team honors. He fanned 104 batters, good for No. 3 in the Big 12 and No. 10 in single-season program history, and allowed only 37 walks in 89.0 innings pitched. The Gahanna, Ohio, native became just the fourth WVU pitcher to log a 100-strikeout season since 2000. In all, he struck out five or more hitters in 12 of his 14 starts.
The 6-foot-7 lefty was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team after a complete-game win over No. 2 Texas on May 26, at the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship, and he was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on March 29. Prior to the campaign, Wolf was tabbed a Preseason All-America Third Team selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA).
Overall, Wolf went 12-11 with a 3.62 ERA in 208.2 career innings at WVU from 2018-21. He tallied 205 strikeouts in 50 appearances, including 33 starts. Additionally, opponents hit just .157 against Wolf in 2020, as well as .204 this past spring.
Bergert, who did not pitch during the 2021 season due to injury, finished 2-1 with a 2.92 ERA as a sophomore in 2020. In all, he holds a 4-1 mark and a 2.30 ERA at West Virginia from 2019-20, recording 21 career appearances with six starts. He has logged 68 strikeouts and only 15 runs allowed in two seasons of action in Morgantown, with opponents batting just .182 against him.
The Canton, Ohio, native was named one of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's National Players of the Week on Feb. 24, 2020, two days after he tallied a 14-strikeout performance in a win against Saint Joseph's. He also was selected to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team in 2019.
The MLB Draft concludes with rounds 11-20 on Tuesday.
