Mountaineers Finish Season No. 18 in Coaches Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia finished No. 18 in the final Ferris Men's Basketball Coaches Poll, powered by USA Today Sports, released earlier today.
The Mountaineers (19-10) advanced to the second round of this year's NCAA Tournament where it lost 75-72 to Syracuse. It's the eighth time since Bob Huggins' return to West Virginia that the Mountaineers have finished ranked in the coaches poll.
Six of the eight have come since 2015.
Last year's team, with a 21-10 record, finished 24th. Huggins' highest finish in the coaches poll at his alma mater occurred in 2010 when the Mountaineers placed third.
It's the 11th time WVU has ended its season ranked in the USA Today Poll since the publication took over the coaches poll in 1991. Overall, it's the Mountaineers' 21st finish in the coaches poll since 1952.
WVU also ended this year ranked 13th in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll released prior to the NCAA Tournament. It was 20th occasion the Mountaineers ended the season ranked in that poll.

Meanwhile, 2020 signee Kobe Johnson from Canton McKinley High was named Ohio's Division I Player of the Year this morning. It's the first time in 14 years a Stark County player has been named the state's top boys player, according to the Canton Repository.
Division I is the largest classification in Ohio.
Johnson, a 6-4 combo guard, averaged 20.7 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game for the Bulldogs this season. He shot 51.1% from the floor and 40.6% from 3-point range to help McKinley to a 17-7 record and a Federal League championship.
The Mountaineers' other November signee, Seth Wilson, a 6-3 guard from Lorain, Ohio, was named to the Division I all-state third team.
